School Day
Today was another school day. In terms of my presence at the school, I have done my best to make my time with my class a bit fun, but also fairly routine so that I'm helping with rather than disrupting their education. This doesn't give such interesting blog posts, but it makes me feel satisfied that I have the right approach.
I worked a bit as a teaching assistant today in the maths class. I noticed that one of the boys was a bit slower to grasp the problems - they adding up numbers with decimal points. He is a lovely, funny, and helpful boy, but one who has a cheeky and lazy side to him... I noticed that as he was a bit slower to write down the problems, he would say that he was ready when he wasn't, and when the teacher went through the problems on the board he would simply copy down the answer. I felt that he wasn't learning anything from doing this, so I sat next to him to give him some one-to-one attention.
At first, he wasn't confident enough to attempt the problems on his own, and he got a little distressed when the answer was rubbed off the board before he had finished copying. With a little guidance to get started though, it didn't take long before he was working out the answers by himself, and he seemed much happier for being able to do so.
Later, when my class had Hindi lessons, there wasn't really anything I could do - I can't read, write, or understand Hindi. I therefore excused myself from that class, but as I was leaving Dhananjai the maths teacher saw me and invited me into his next class. He was taking the 2nd grade class for their arts and crafts, so I sat with the children. They were drawing and colouring, and I drew an elephant as well as giving positive feedback to the children and trying to learn some more of their names. I always find it a lot harder to learn unfamiliar names, as you are not only learning which name goes with which person, but you are also having to learn what the names are.
There haven't been many photos in this post, so here is a picture I took in the afternoon. This is Scooby, a pug who was re-homed to the SEDS farm when his owner moved to Dubai for work and couldn't take him with her. He is ugly and he's smelly, but he is the sweetest little person and I love him <3
